What To Look for when purchasing an essential oil

Essential oils are not a regulated industry in the United States.  With this in mind, you must take care to know exactly what you are looking for when setting out to make a purchase.

There are four very important things to look for on a label before you decide to purchase an essential oil.

  1. Latin name for the plant.  This  is a critical criteria for knowing exactly which species of plant you are purchasing.  For example:  Lavender has several genesis and they all have different therapeutic qualities to them.  You want to make sure you are purchasing the most suitable essential oil for your desired outcome of its use.
  2. Plant part is another important piece of information you will want to know.  Essential oils can be distilled from leaves, needles, seeds, flowers, roots (just to name a few).  Each part of the plant will give a different variation of properties.  there should always be one single plant part that is being distilled on the bottle your are purchasing.  This is the only way to know if you are actually getting an essential oil that will have the maximum therapeutic properties in it.  Let's use lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia) again as our example.  To assure that we are getting a product with the highest percentages of linalool and linalyl acetate, we should see that only the flowers have been used in the distillation process.  If this is not clearly stated on the bottle, the entire plant could have been used in the distillation process, causing therapeutic properties to be lessened.  The product would still be "pure lavender" but may not contain the best therapeutic properties.
  3. Batch number is extremely important in case there are any issues with the oil, you can go back to the manufacturer and they can readily access where that batch came from to find out if there was an issue with that particular distillation.
  4. Country of origin.  It is best practice to purchase essential oils from the country that the plant indigenously grows in.  By choosing  essential oils  where the plants were grown in their native environment, we can be assured that they have had the best growing conditions, therefore, producing the best quality product.  Take for example, we would not want to purchase a pineapple to eat that was grown in northern Michigan.  The environment is not conducive to growing this tropical plant, therefore, we would not get the same luscious, sweet fruit that we would get if the pineapple was grown on Maui.

If you are not able to find the above information on the label fo the essential oil you are looking to purchase, you may want to consider another source for your purchase.  Again, the United States does not have "ANY" regulations for sourcing, distilling, packaging or selling essential oils so it is a very "buyer beware" industry.  Ask questions and if you are not getting good answers, check that supplier off your list and move on to another one.

One more extremely critical element of deciding where to purchase your essential oils is the availability of reviewing the, third party, GCMS testing results of the essential oil your are looking to purchase.  This report will give you all fo the percentages of chemical components that are in that bottle.  There is absolutely no way to find out the purity of the product unless you can see this testing sheet.  If a company is not able to give you this information, again, move on from that company.  There is no proprietary information in these reports, just the % of chemical components in the product.  Even if you do not know how to read these testing reports, the fact that they are willing to give them to you speaks volumes of the transparency of the company.
